Why not just pressure wash the roof?
Because high pressure strips the granules that protect asphalt shingles and can force water under the courses. It looks fine for a season and shortens the life of the roof. Soft washing is the correct method and it is the only one we use up there.
What actually causes the black streaks?
Biological growth — mold, mildew and algae — not road dirt. That is why it comes back after a rinse and why a cleaning solution rather than force is what removes it.
Do you clean gutters at the same time?
